nīvaraṇa
(Sanskrit; Pāli). The five nīvaraṇas or ‘hindrances’ are vices that disturb the mind and obscure one's vision of the truth. In Pāli sources they are: (1) sensuous desire (kāmacchanda), (2) hatred (vyāpāda), (3) sloth (thīna-middha), (4) anxiety (uddhaccakukkucca), and (5) doubt (vicikicchā). It is impossible to enter the trances (dhyānas) while these hindrances are present.
