The best of Fania and the many labels gradually gathered under its umbrella goes nearly all the way toward collecting the best salsa being recorded between 1965 and 1980 -- Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Tito Puente, Hector Lavoe, Cheo Feliciano, and Mongo Santamaria (the list could go on for ages). And on New York City Salsa, it does. A two-disc compilation with no repeat acts, it doesn't include any tracks from the best Fania albums (Siembra or Cosa Nuestra by Willie Colon, Acid by Ray Barretto, ) but it favors the musicianly side of salsa instead of the crate-digger, rare-groove side of things. ~ John Bush, Rovi
