Critical response
The film received rave reviews when it was released in Spain. Fotogramas, the country's top film magazine, gave it a five-star rating.[1] It also received a standing ovation when it was released in Mexico and United Kingdom. Mexican movie actress and critic Ingrid Coronado gave it a rare 5 stars rating, saying, "Hernandez's acting is superlative, full of passion and feeling, the film is something rare, especially considering how fine the screenplay is, a film that's fuller and deeper than the anything else."[2]
Locations
The film takes place mostly in the apartment room in which Martin Hernandez dies. In October 2006, Martin Hernandez re-shot scenes for the movie in Los Angeles's Westfield West Covina mall. [3]
Marketing
At the premiere of Pan's Labyrinth in the United Kingdom, director Bethania Maclean showed the short version of Nado Sincronizado.[4] In one of the trailers there is no narrator or any scene of the film. The U.S. trailer premiered in selected screenings of Hostel: Part II and later a longer version in The Invasion. In the trailer, the narrator says "His life. His story," which was the tagline to the controversial drama film The Hours directed by Stephen Daldry. It was promoted in commercials on TV as "the perfect film."
On the date of the limited release of the film in the United States on August 24, 2007, interviews with director Bethania MacLean and cast members Martin Hernandez and Taira Court were released at HBO[5]. Some unofficial fan-made trailers were uploaded to You Tube, Google Videos and to MySpace.
The short version of the movie will be promoted in the United States on December 25, 2007 in order to gain attention with the public in different parts of the world including Japan, Germany and Italy. The full thirteen minute piece will be offered from the iTunes Store for free. If someone obtains a copy of the movie file from a secondary source that originates with iTunes there must be a valid iTunes account to access and play the file. In short, there appears to be a connection between this promotion and Apple whereby Apple will gain more potential iTunes Store customers with financial information on record. This same promotion was used by the short film Hotel Chevalier in order to promote The Darjeeling Limited.
Awards
Among its awards, it won the "Best Foreign Language film" at the Cinanima Awards, "Best Supporting Actor" at the Ariel Awards, and one nomination for Young actor at the Alma Awards: Martin Hernandez was acclaimed by critics around the world for his role as Ricardo.
