Biography

Not to be confused with the Swedish band Naglfar, Aachen, Germany's Nagelfar were founded in 1993 by guitarist Zorn and drummer Alexander von Meilenwald, sharing only their mutual interest in black metal and a name based on the "wraith ferry" described in Norse mythology. After sharpening their sound on a couple of demos and adding vocalist Jander and bassist Sveinn, Nagelfar recorded their first full-length album, Hünengrab Im Herbst, in 1997, with hometown hero Andy Classen of Holy Moses fame acting as producer. This, along with its 1999 follow-up, Strontgorrth, showcased the band's uncompromising brand of epic, German-sung black metal in all its misanthropic extremis, and the latter also introduced new members Zingultus (vocals) and Chaos (bass) to the team. Nagelfar later signed with indie label Ars Metalli for the 2001 release of their third and, as it turned out, final album, Virus West, after which they quietly decided to go their separate ways. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide

:This article is about the Black Metal band Nagelfar. For ship from Germanic mythology, see its Norse spelling at Naglfar

Nagelfar (not to be confused with the Swedish Naglfar) were a German progressive black metal band who also frequently incorporated influences from industrial music. The band was founded in 1993 by Zorn and Rhyktius V. Grhabakk von Meilenwald. After a long search for a lead vocalist, Smaug was selected; Svein von Hackenberg became acquainted with Smaug and Rhyktius at a party and entered the band's lineup as bassist in 1995. In autumn 1995, Smaug was replaced by Jander, and Garvin joined as session keyboardist.

This lineup recorded the band's first demo, Als die Tore sich öffnen ("As the Gates Open"); their second demo, Jagd ("Hunt"), followed the next year before the band secured a contract with Kettenhund Records.

In 1997, the band's first album, Hünengrab im Herbst, appeared; a split EP with Dark Embrace, contraining the track "Nur ein See" ("Only One Lake") followed the same year. In 1998, Svein von Hackenberg departed for personal reasons; he was replaced by Chaos.

The production of Srontgorrth, a concept album, was marred by turmoil, resulting in the departure of Jander before all the vocal tracks had been recorded. Zingultus was Jander's replacement, and Chaos left the band shortly after the completion of Srontgorrth. In 2001, Virus West appeared; in April 2002, the band broke up for unspecified reasons.

After the band's breakup, drummer Alexander von Meilenwald went on to form the one-man band The Ruins of Beverast. Curiously, the band themselves did not appear to consider Srontgorrth as an album; the band's official website labels Virus West as their second album.
