1. A city in Mesopotamia to which Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for his son Isaac. It occurs frequently in texts from Mesopotamia and is located in the upper Balih River.
2. The son of Serug, father of Terah and grandfather of Abraham, Nahor and Haran (Gen 11:22-26).
3. The son of Terah, brother of Abraham and Haran and the grandson of Nahor No. 2. Nahor was married to Milcah, the daughter of his brother Haran (Gen 11:29). She bore him eight sons (Gen 22:20-22), while his concubine gave birth to another four (Gen 22:24).
In the time of the patriarchs a belief in the ancestral deities was still prevalent as is evident from the story of the covenant between Laban and Jacob: "The God of Abraham, the God of Nahor, and the God of their father judge between us" (Gen 31:53).
