Review

From Boston modern rock outlet WBCN comes this set of live material. There's stuff from big-league types like Stone Temple Pilots ("Interstate Love Song"), as well as hometown heroes Aerosmith ("Walk This Way") and Mighty Mighty Bosstones, who run amiably through their somewhat unlikely alternative radio hit "The Impression That I Get." Radiohead is also here with a version of "Permanent Daylight," making Naked of note to that band's constituency of rabid completists. But despite these highlights, the album suffers under the yoke of Too Much Post-Grunge. We'll grant a reprieve to Godsmack and Staind, New Englanders that they are. But there's really no excuse for the leather pants and spangles of Static-X and Powerman 5000. The bands' respective takes on the bellow, crunch, and wail formula are predictably shrill in a live setting, overcompensating for the enormity of their studio sound by turning everything to 12 and accelerating to ludicrous speed. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
