Trinh T. Minh-ha's impressionistic, non-linear documentary takes the viewer deep into the heart of traditional West Africa -- into the private living spaces where people eat, drink, converse, make their living, and pass the time. Shot in rural areas of Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, and Senegal, the film deliberately questions ethnographic constructions of rural culture and primitivism. Minh-ha's poetic sensibilities and intellectual vigor contribute to the film's pensive, probing, and ultimately ambiguous mood. ~ Sarah Welsh, Rovi
