A Chinese Ch'an master and direct disciple of the Sixth Patriarch Hui-neng (638-713), and founder of one of the main lines of Ch'an during the T'ang dynasty. He came from a family in Shaan-hsi surnamed Tu, and is sometimes referred to as Ch'an master Ta-hui. He functions in Ch'an literature chiefly as a transitional figure linking his famous disciple Ma-tsu Tao-i (709-88) back to the Sixth Patriarch.
