Nanao (七尾市 Nanao-shi) is a city located in Ishikawa, Japan.
As of 2005, the city has an estimated population of 62,665 and the density of 197.1 persons per km². The total area is 317.96 km².
Nanao is situated in the middle of Noto Peninsula and was the ancient capital of Noto Province. It has several popular onsen such as Wakura Onsen, which is regarded as one of the most high-grade onsen in Japan.
The city of Nanao was founded on October 1, 2004, by the merger of the old Nanao-shi (七尾市), Tatsuruhama, Nakajima, and Notojima. The former city of Nanao was founded on July 20, 1939, and as of 2003 (before the merger) it had an estimated population of 46,743, density of 324.67 persons per km², and a total area of 143.97 km².
On March 25, 2007, the 2007 Noto earthquake shook Nanao and nearby communities.
