'Southern Chong'. During the Han dynasty (206 bc–ad 220) it was called Chongguo 'Prosperous Kingdom County' from
chōng 'full', a reference to the fertile and productive agricultural plain here, and
guó 'county'. Because it was in the southern part of the county the Sui dynasty (581–618) changed the name to Nanchong County; the city was established in 1950.
