History

Nando's Chickenland take-away in Canal Walk Shopping Mall, Cape Town, South Africa

The restaurant is named after Nandie, the son of Fernando Duarte who is one of the founders of the chain, who is originally Portuguese. He and a friend, Robert Brozin, bought a restaurant called Chickenland in Rosettenville, southern Johannesburg, in 1987.[2] This became the first Nando's restaurant, which incorporated influences from former Portuguese colonists from Mozambique, many of whom had settled on the south-eastern side of Johannesburg, after their homeland’s independence in 1975. Nandos also do a steak dish. [1]

Halal and Kosher

In many regions, Nando's offers halaal and kosher chicken.[1] In Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, New Zealand[3], Pakistan and the United Kingdom, a large number of their restaurants are halal.[citation needed] All their restaurants in Muslim countries are halal. One branch of Nando's in South Africa, in the Johannesburg suburb of Savoy, Savoy Kosher Nando's, is kosher,[4] in addition to several in Israel.[5]

Global Locations

Nando's has locations in Australia, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Kuwait, Botswana, Canada, Cyprus, Fiji, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Lebanon, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Swaziland, the UAE, Uganda, the UK, the USA (Washington, DC) and Zimbabwe.[6]

United Kingdom

Five years after starting, Nando’s expanded to the UK and now has over 50 stores in London alone.[1]

In the UK, Nando's buy their "Green Chicken Table Sticks" from Costco in bulk, sold at £18.72 Inc VAT for a pack of 750.

The menu of Nando's in the UK is constantly changing, and new products such as a range of new desert cakes, mashed potato, "Macho Peas" and a new salad are currently being trialled in restaurants across the UK. New uniforms are also currently being trialled which leave the original black and green colour scheme, changing to a black and orange mix for both the shirts and aprons.

Canada

Nando’s has operated since 1994 in the Canadian cities of Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Ottawa.[1]

Nando's shop

Nando's has online web stores in Australia, United Kingdom and the USA. Customers can purchase a range of Nando's branded sauces, sprinkles and apparel. Nando's also sells their range of sauces and sprinkles through major supermarkets.

Notable Nando's customers

  • Nando's suggests on their website that David Beckham and the England team have visited the Nando's restaurant located in Manchester.[7]
  • TV comedian Ricky Gervais is a fan of Nando's and in an article [8] he mentions that if The Office were syndicated in the US, he would "buy Buckingham Palace and turn it into a huge Nando's". However, he has also said, "I'm never going to go to Nando's in Coventry" [9]
  • In the London leg of the Britney Spears 2009 circus tour, she asked for her hotel to provide a Nando's chef, so that she could have fried chicken at any time during the day. Unfortunately Nando's grills their chicken.[citation needed]

Advertising Controversy

Nando's is known in South Africa for its humorous but often controversial adverts. One such television advert from 2000, involved a blind woman being led into a pole intentionally and knocked unconscious by her guide dog, which then proceeded to eat the chicken that the woman had just purchased. This caused an uproar within the blind community and caused the South African Advertising Standards Authority to call for the withdrawal of the advert[10].

In Australia, Nandos ran an advertising campaign based around the 2002 political controversy regarding the mandatory detention of illegal immigrants. The detainees had been waging a hunger strike campaign, even resorting to physically sewing their lips closed. Nandos adverts proclaimed that the strikers "decided to unsew their lips after hearing the news that with every Nando's quarter chicken combo, Nando's are giving away an extra quarter chicken free". The campaign was created by Melbourne's Sphere Advertising. [11]

In 2007 there was further controversy in Australia when Nando's aired a sexually explicit advertising, centered around a family whose mother figure was also a pole dancer. Despite complaints to have it removed, the Advertising Standards Bureau ruled that it did not contain excessive nudity for its M rating.

Currently, the above advert is still causing a heated debate. It ranges from almost anti-Nando militant blogs to modest reviews in some Australian online directories.[12]

Nandos in the UK has caused controversy by advertising some of its store as serving Halaal chicken. However as the HMC (Halaal Muslim Council) explains there is doubt over whether suppliers are meeting the needs of Nandos' Muslim Customers. [13]

An internal video for Nandos staff leaked in May 2005, starring Melinda Messenger, and other celebrities which can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMTGfWPnpgo

During the South African national elections of 2009, Nando's made an advert lampooning ANC Youth League president Julius Malema. Malema's lawyers sued Nando's and the original advert was removed. However, an altered version was released, with Malema's face pixelated and his voice altered.
