The Nanjing Metro (simplified Chinese: 南京地铁; pinyin: Nánjīng Dìtiě) is a metro system serving the city of Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.
The construction of Line 1 began in 2000 and it was inaugurated on September 3, 2005.[1], it is 21.72 km long with 16 stations.

Network
Line 1
The Line 1 is 21.72 km long, and runs from Maigaoqiao via Xiaohang to Olympic Stadium Centre. 14.33 km of the metro track runs underground, while the Xiaohang, Zhonghuamen, Hongshan Zoo, Maigaoqiao, and Andemen - about 7.39 km total - runs above ground. [2]
West Extension Line
Actually Maigaoqiao to Xiaohang was phase 1 of Line 1, it's 16.90 km long. Xiaohang to Olympic Stadium Centre is the western extension phase of Line 1, it is 4.82 km. The phase 1(16.9 km) and western extension(4.82 km) form the current 21.72 km long Line 1.
South Extension Line
It's 24.47 km long south from Line 1's Andemen to Pharmacy University. 15 stations, opens in May 2010.[3] It's presently the southern extension of Line 1.

Line 2
It's 25.145 km long, 19 stations, runs from Wangjiacun to Maqun. Line 2 is currently under construction, and will be completed by May 2010.

East Extension Line
It's 12.963 km long, 8 stations, from Maqun To Physical Education College. The stations are:

- Nanjing Normal University Xianlin Campus (南师大仙林校区)

Line 3
Its planned length is 30.8 km. Construction will start in May 2010.
Ticket system
Like many metro systems in the world, fares on the Nanjing Subway are distance-based. Fares range from 2 yuan (approx USD $0.25) for journeys under 8 stations, to 4 yuan for longer journeys. There is a 5% discount for users of the Nanjing Public Utility IC Card.
Single tickets
Single journey tickets can be purchased from the ticket vending machine or at a ticket window. The ticket vending machine accepts coins and bills.
Transit Card
Apart from the single ticket, payment for the journey can be made by buying a Nanjing Public Utility IC Card. This contactless card can be bought for a refundable fee of 30 yuan at convenience stores and metro stations. This card can be refilled at ticket booths situated at the metro stations as well as many small convenience shops throughout the city. The card can also be used to pay for other forms of transportation, such as taxi or bus.
This transit card is similar to the Chicago Card of the CTA, the SmarTrip of the Washington Metro, and the Octopus card of Hong Kong's MTR.
Rolling stock
- 20 six-car Alstom/Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Works Metropolis sets - ordered in 2002 for Line 1 opening.[1]
- 21 six-car Alstom/Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Works Metropolis ordered January 2008 for Line 1 extension.[3]
- 144 Alstom/Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Works Metropolis cars ordered 2007 for Line 2.[4]
Signaling System
For line 1 Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) was awarded the supply contract in November 2002.
For line 2 Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) and its local partner Nanjing Research Institute of Electronic Technology (NRIET) have been awarded to supply the signaling system after signing a contract (about 25 million Euro). Technologies used include Trainguard MT, Vicos OC 501, Sicas ECC and Az S 350 U axle counting system.[5]
