(1849-1927)
One of the first Asian Buddhists to travel to the West to pursue Buddhist studies. He arrived in England in 1876 according to the instructions of his Higashi-honganji superiors (see Honganji), and studied languages at Oxford with Friedrich Max Müller. After several years of Sanskrit study, Nanjio returned to Japan and became one of the pioneers of modern Buddhist studies there.
