The reconstruction of two highly unusual archaeal genomes by de novo metagenomic assembly of multiple, deeply sequenced libraries via multi-locus phylogenetic analyses, from surface waters of Lake Tyrrell, a hypersaline lake in NW Victoria (Australia) has led to the creation of a major novel euryarchaeal lineage, distantly related to halophilic archaea of class Halobacteria. In addition to their high abundance in Lake Tyrrell surface waters, there is a prevalence of Nanohaloarchaea in other hypersaline environments worldwide.[1]
The currently accepted taxonomy is based on the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN) [2] and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)[3]
