Nanohaloarchaea
Scientific classification
Domain: Archaea
Kingdom: Euryarchaeota
Phylum: Euryarchaeota
Garrity and Holt 2002
Class: Nanohaloarchaea Narasingarao et al. 2012
Genera
  • 'Candidatus Haloredivivus' Ghai et al. 2011
  • 'Candidatus Nanosalina' Narasingarao et al. 2012
  • 'Candidatus Nanosalinarum' Narasingarao et al. 2012

The reconstruction of two highly unusual archaeal genomes by de novo metagenomic assembly of multiple, deeply sequenced libraries via multi-locus phylogenetic analyses, from surface waters of Lake Tyrrell, a hypersaline lake in NW Victoria (Australia) has led to the creation of a major novel euryarchaeal lineage, distantly related to halophilic archaea of class Halobacteria. In addition to their high abundance in Lake Tyrrell surface waters, there is a prevalence of Nanohaloarchaea in other hypersaline environments worldwide.[1]

Taxonomy

The currently accepted taxonomy is based on the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN) [2] and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)[3]

  • 'Candidatus Haloredivivus' ♠ Ghai et al. 2011
  • 'Candidatus Nanosalina' ♠ Narasingarao et al. 2012
  • 'Candidatus Nanosalinarum' ♠ Narasingarao et al. 2012

Notes:
♠ Strain found at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) but not listed in the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN)
