Naomi Novik (born April 30, 1973) is an American novelist. She was born in New York in 1973, a first-generation American. Her father is of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry, and her mother is an ethnic Pole. She studied English Literature at Brown University, and holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from Columbia University. She participated in the design and development of the computer game Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide, until she discovered she preferred writing to game design. Novik is married to entrepreneur and writer Charles Ardai.[1] They live in Manhattan.

Her first novel, His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire in the UK), which commences the Temeraire series, is an alternate history of the Napoleonic Wars in a "Flintlock Fantasy" world in which dragons are abundant and used in aerial combat. His Majesty's Dragon won the Compton Crook Award in 2007, as well as being nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel.

The fifth book in the series, Victory of Eagles, was published in July 2008.[2]

In September 2006, it was reported that Peter Jackson optioned the Temeraire series, including all forthcoming books.[3]

In September 2007, Novik was awarded the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer for best new science fiction writer of 2006. She also won the 2007 Compton Crook Award.
