Napoleon Collins
Collins, Napoleon (1814-75) Union naval officer, born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. In the Mexican War (1846-48), Collins joined Commodore Matthew C. Perry's expedition up the Tuxpan River (1847). During the Civil War, he helped capture several Confederate forts and British and Confederate ships. Collins is best remembered for his capture of the Confederate ship Florida off the coast of Brazil, a bold violation of Brazilian neutrality that earned him both praise and criticism; he was court-martialed but ordered back to service in 1866.
