Inlet and cape, southeastern coast of the
Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. The site of an Egyptian military base, it was captured by Israeli forces in the Sinai campaign of 1956 (
see Suez Crisis). After the
Six-Day War in 1967, Israel again occupied the site before withdrawing from the Sinai Peninsula in the early 1980s. In 1972 a new town, Ophira (now Sharm al-Shaykh), was built there. The region has been developed as a recreational and tourist area.
