The National Economic Council (NEC) advises the President on matters relating to domestic and international economic policy. Established in 1993 as part of the Office of Policy Development, the NEC coordinates domestic and international policy-making and economic policy advice to the President, and monitors consistent application of programs and policies. The council consists of department and agency heads from throughout the Executive Office whose policy jurisdictions affect the US economy. Agriculture, commerce, energy, financial markets, health care, labor, and social security are all issues taken up by the NEC.
