Don't get too excited, National Health Insurance Company (NHIC) doesn't really cover the whole nation, just 47 states and the District of Columbia. However, in those states, the private company does provide health and life insurance plans. Its products include dental, term life, and preferred provider hospital-surgical policies. Its preferred provider networks are provided by such third parties as MultiPlan. The company focuses on high-deductible catastrophic insurance plans for self-employed and small businesses, a market the firm pioneered in 1975. NHIC was founded in 1923 as William Harvey Life Insurance Company and today is owned by National Health Corporation.

Government health care program in several European countries that has been proposed in various forms for the U.S., to be administered by the federal government.
1. Plan A— would cover all U.S. residents. Comprehensive benefits, financed by a combination of payroll taxes and general revenues, would include physician services, inpatient and outpatient hospital care, home health services, and supporting services such as optometry, podiatry, devices and appliances, and dental care.
2. Plan B— would expand medicare to cover the general population.
3. Plan C— would pay premiums for the needy and allow income tax credits for others to purchase private health insurance. The entire U.S. population would be covered. Individuals with no federal income tax liability would receive full payment of health insurance premiums.
