The Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía, best-known by the acronym INEGI (may be translated as National Institute of Statistics and Geography) is an autonomous agency of the Federal Mexican government dedicated to the collection and organization of statistical, demographic, geographical and economic information on the country. It also used to be responsible for the Information Technology policy of government agencies in Mexico (hence the appearance of "informatics" in its former name, Instituto Nacional de Estadística, Geografía e Informática), but this function was handed over to the Secretary of the Mexican Civil Service in 2001.
INEGI was founded by presidential decree, on January 25, 1983 with the merger of the Bureau of Statistics (Dirección General de Estadística or DGE, founded in 1882) and the Bureau of Geography (founded in 1968). It is headquartered in the city Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes.
The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) is the national authority responsible for the production of official statistics and geographical information. Since July 15, 2008, is an autonomous entity of the Mexican State with the following objectives:Generate statistical and geographical information of national interest; coordinate the development of the National Statistical and Geographic Information System; provide access to the statistical and geographical information; promote the use of statistical and geographical information among all sectors of the society.
The system integrates four national information subsystems; Social and Demographic; Economic; Geographical and Environmental; Government, Security and Public Order.
The National System will be jointly developed by all information producing agencies of the federal, state and local governments under INEGI's coordination. These agencies include: 1. The offices of the Federal Government, including the Presidency and the General Attorney; 2. The legislative and judicial power; 3. The states and municipalities; 4. Autonomous constitutional bodies; 5. Federal administrative tribunals;

Products
Demography
- Censo General de Población y Vivienda, or National Population and Housing Census. It is an exhaustive survey that collects information on the population via direct interviewing on every household in the nation every ten years. The most recent censo took place in 2000, and the next is scheduled for 2010.
- Conteo de Población y Vivienda, a lower-scale census also conducted decennially, the timing of which is offset from the censo general by five years. The most recent conteo took place in 2005, and the next is scheduled for 2015.
Macroeconomic indices
- Banco de Informacion Economica, or Economic Information Dataset, it contain information on the principal macroeconomic aggregates of the country including national economy, fiscal policy, external trade, employment and unemployment.
Surveys
- Censo Económico, or Economic Census is an exhaustive survey that that collects information on the fishing, mining, electricity generation, water resources, manufacturing, construction, transportation, postal, and warehousing sectors of the economy every five years. The last censo económico took place in 2004.
- Encuesta Nacional de Ingreso Gasto, or National Income Expenditure Survey, similar to the US CEX includes information about income and expenditure at household level. The survey is carried out each two years since 1984.
- Encuesta Nacional de Empleo, or National Employment Survey, presents information about labour conditions at individual level. It is carried out in a quarterly based.
Cartography
- INEGI is in charge of producing up to date maps and charts of Mexico's territory.
