The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India (formerly the Regional Engineering College, Durgapur), was established under an Act of the Parliament of India in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges. It is a fully funded Technological Institution of the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. In 2010, NIT-Durgapur will celebrate its Golden Jubilee Year (completing 50 years), NIT-Durgapur is one of the oldest of 14-RECs established between 1959 and 1965.
As of August 2007 NIT Durgapur has been declared an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act(before 2005 it was controlled by WBUT), and thus enabling it and other NITs to become centres of excellence like IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and help fulfil the need of the country for quality manpower in the field of engineering, science, technology and management.
Admissions
Admissions to undergraduate courses at NIT Durgapur is competitive and is through the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE). There are a few seats for NRI(Non resident Indian) and DASA students. Admission to graduate programs requires competitive scores in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and National Institute of Technology MCA Common Entrance Test (NIMCET).
NIT DGP follows the reservation policy declared by the Supreme Court of India, by which 27% of seats are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15% for Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (STs).
In addition, NIT DGP also accepts foreign nationals through scholarships under the Government of India and Non-Resident Indians or Persons of Indian Origin, for undergraduate programs through an independent scheme known as the Direct Admission for Students Abroad.
