National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, one of the 20 NITs in India. It was formerly known as Regional Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur. This University was established in 1960 in Jamshedpur in the then state of undivided Bihar. It is among the first 8 RECs established during second five year plan and the only REC which was institute of technology rather than a college of engineering at that time. Now Jamshedpur serves as the NIT for the state of Jharkhand while NIT Patna acts as the NIT for Bihar. The institute offers courses in engineering and basic sciences at the undergraduate, graduate and doctorate level.

Location

NIT Jamshedpur campus consists of about 350 acres (1.4 km2) of land located about 2 km off the Tata-Seraikella Road. It is also located about 3 km from Adityapur railway station and 11 km from main Tatanagar railway station. The academic and administrative buildings are located between the Up-Hostels and the Down-hostels. The Kharkai river meanders 2 kilometers away from the Down Hostels. The institute is at the epicenter of the industrial belt of Adityapur.

Hostels,Infrastructure and clubs

There are, in total, 11 hostels (9 for boys and 2 for girls). They are provided with wi-fi and LAN connections.Each hostel has its own mess and common room, where residents can watch television which has connections of DTH service either of Dish TV or Tata Sky, read magazines and newspaper. The hostel are:

The college has a computer center with more than 300 pcs. There is a VLSI lab. above the computer center which has all the facilities of modern VLSI design.This lab. is under ECE department. The college has a canteen in the main college area and one in the down's hostel area which is more famous by the name of "shyam da's". It has stationary store and a telephone booth in the main college building. The college has many clubs out of which, the most prominent ones are,

  • CDS: Cultural and Dramatics Society: The largest club in NIT Jamshedpur. It has more than 150 members and students who have passions about vocals eastern and western, choreography, dancing (group and solo), dramatics include street play and skit, Anchoring and RJ, and Rock bands. CDS always have active participation in NIT J's National Level Cultural Fest Utkarsh. CDS conducts competitions in Rock Bands, Choreography, Vocals, Street play, Recently a Street play organized by CDS was Shown on National Television.
  • LDS: The Literary and Debating Society: is one of the most active clubs in the college. The LDS serves as one of the platforms where students can showcase their talents. But students many a times have to deal with the raw deal and discrimination to them by the Maharashtra and Karnataka students who have historically formed the majority. They have wanted to have their statemates to rule the roots in this club.
  • NSS National Social Service : is a society which strives to inculcate good social habits among the students. Its activities include cleaning of the campus, spreading awareness about the environment, visits to nearby slums to improve empathy towards the deprived classes and other activities. Activities Include: Organizing Blood Donation Camps, Building Websites for free for near by Small Scale Industries as the college is situated in Adityapur Industrial Area.
  • FACES: Fine Arts Club for Engineering Students : It is club for those students who have passion for painting, sketching, junk art, thermocoal modeling, calligraphy, card design, collage making, clay modeling etc;.

Utkarsh is the annual cultural festival of the college.It is organised at national level and participants from the colleges all over India come to participate in it.The main attraction of Utkarsh is 'SHADES' which is organised by the college's FACES club members. In this a whole room is decorated under a given theme using the junk items. The cultural fest consists of many competitions for dance,singing,fine arts,GD,JAM,antakshri,fashion show etc...Many other attractions like juke box,paper dance,street play,x-games,rock concert,hansya kavi sammelan etc. are also there. Thus in total its a time of fun and joy for the technocrats.

Notable alumni

As NIT Jamshedpur is located in the newly formed state of Jharkhand, the alumni association realizing the obligation towards developing the state, came up with the idea of organizing the "Global Summit on Infrastructure Development of Jharkhand" and the "Trade Technology Show" at NIT campus in January 2003 with the aim to provide technical guidance to the state government in formulating its policies and utilize the resources in the right direction. Members of the alumni association not only from India but also from abroad participated in these two events to help in our noble effort.

NIT (RIT) alumni association also organized "The 2004 India Power Conclave" in New Delhi during January 2004, which was the Indian Power Show of the decade and was aimed to provide an international forum to over 600 delegates from all across the globe and the who-is-who of the industry, to explore Indian power sector's investment potential of USD 400 billion and the way ahead, the historic electricity act 2003, the impetus behind which was Mr. R.V. Sahi, Secretary, Power Ministry, Government of India, an alumnus.
