From robots designed to help the elderly to statistical models that promise more accurate fire hazard estimates; from the world's first freely available Web browser that included both graphics and text to improved movie theater acoustics and speaker technology, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has had a hand. This US government agency funds science and engineering research and education. Grant recipients include colleges, universities, school systems, businesses, science organizations, and other research groups throughout the US. The foundation receives more than 42,000 proposals annually, of which some 11,000 are funded. The NSF has an annual budget of nearly $6 billion.
