General Dynamics NASSCO (formerly National Steel and Shipbuilding Company) knows what floats your boat. The General Dynamics subsidiary operates the largest new-construction shipyard on the West Coast, where it designs, builds, and repairs large, ocean-bound military and commercial ships. NASSCO has built or converted more than 100 ships -- about split between US Navy and commercial customers -- including containerships, ferries, hospital ships, oil tankers, and ships for combat support and oceanographic research. NASSCO's location makes it the key repair facility for the Navy's Pacific Fleet. The company was founded in 1905 as a machine shop before being acquired by General Dynamics in 1998.
