National Stock Exchange

Financial & Investment Dictionary: National Stock Exchange (NSX)

Founded in 1885, it was the first all-electronic stock exchange in the United States, having replaced its physical trading floor with a completely automated market in 1980. Exchange membership consists of registered broker-dealers. NSX created the National Securities Trading System, NSTS, which automatically performs all functions of an auction market. NSTS, an electronic securities communication and execution facility, consolidates bids and offers of competing dealers, as well as public orders, for review and execution by users. NSTS contains features envisioned for a national exchange market system. Founded in Cincinnati and formerly called The Cincinnati Stock Exchange, the Exchange moved to Chicago in 1995 and changed its name to National Stock Exchange in 2003. Trading is Monday through Friday. www.nsx.com.
