Plot

Rafael Trujillo rose from leading the Dominican Republic's National Guard to become president of the country in 1930; he held the office until 1938, and served again from 1942 to 1952, but from the time he was first elected until his death in 1961, he was effectively dictator of the Dominican Republic, consolidating military power to maintain control of his nation, winning the support of the United States for his anti-communist views, and striking out with bloody reprisals against anyone who opposed him. Trujillo ruled over one of the deadliest regimes in Latin American history, and filmmaker Javier Balaguer offers an episodic look at the grim facts behind Trujillo's rule in this documentary. Oriundos de la noche (aka Natives Of The Night) examines Trujillo's brutal rule and profiles three Dominicans who opposed it -- Minerva Mirabal, a progressive activist who spoke out against the dictator and died at his hand, Juan Bosch, a politician who succeeded Trujillo as president after his death, and Pedro Mir, a celebrated poet who used his verse to speak out against the violence around him. Natives Of The Night was screened as an official selection at the 2008 Chimenea de Villaverde Latin American Film Festival, held in Madrid, Spain. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
