This remarkable PBS documentary was the result of six years' collaboration between Sri Lankan businessman Jehan Kumara, Dr. Ravi Samarashina, and Scottish cameraman Gordon Buchman. Although Sri Lanka's Yala National Park game preserve had been in existence for nearly a century, it has been virtually impossible to capture on film the preserve's legendary leopards, who only prowl in the dark of night. But thanks to the diligence of the three above-mentioned men, the big cats are at last shown thriving in their natural habitat in a series of astonishing vignettes, including a riveting sequence showing the leopard's hunting and eating habits. An Anglo-American co-production, The Leopards of Yala first aired in the U.S. as an episode of the PBS anthology Nature. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
