Review

The first release in Piehead's 2003 limited-edition series of 3" CDs is a sunny debut by Temper (aka Michael Weak). An admitted dilettante bedroom computer musician, Weak produced for this EP a set of naïve melodies that range from slightly psychedelic IDM ("Still Dreaming") to the kind of whistle-friendly tunes Felix Kubin and Hellothisisalex put together. The three "Pianobox" tracks hint at a quirky sense of melody under their amateurish looks. The arrangements remain simpler than simple but are not without a certain elegance. The last track, "Please Save Your Applause Until the End, Thank You" (ha ha, handclaps are involved), takes a chance at a more thumping form of techno to mixed results -- the music loses part of its debutante charm. Navy Blue rarely goes beyond cute, but it has its encouraging moments. ~ François Couture, Rovi
