Nazarener, a term applied, originally in derision, to the Lukasbund, a group of Romantic artists founded in Vienna in 1809 by J. F. Overbeck (1789-1869) and F. Pforr (1788-1812). Among the members were also P. Cornelius, W. Schadow (1788-1862), J. Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1794-1872), and Philipp Veit and his brother Joseph. The object of the Nazarener was a renewal of religious painting, based on Raphael and Perugino. The League (Bund) exercised some influence on the English Pre-Raphaelites.
