in commodity futures or option trading, the expiration dates, expressed as months, closest to the present. For a commodity or an option that had delivery or expiration dates available in September, December, March, and June, for instance, the nearest month would be September if a trade were being made in August.
Nearest month contracts, called nearbys, are always more heavily traded than Furthest Month contracts.
