nearly free electron method

(¦nir·lē ¦frē i¦lek′trän ′meth·əd)

(solid-state physics) A method of approximating the energy levels of electrons in a crystal lattice by considering the potential energy resulting from atomic nuclei and from other electrons in the lattice as a perturbation on free electron states. Abbreviated NFE method.
