Review

This LP from the Australian Swaggie label pays tribute to the legend of Ned Kelly, an outlaw of the 1870s. Although the subject matter is obscure, Dave Dallwitz's 11 originals for trumpeter Bob Barnard's trad jazz quintet/sextet are fairly accessible. Barnard is joined by the versatile Don Burrows (on alto, clarinet, baritone and flute), vibraphonist John Sangster, bassist Dieter Vogt, drummer Len Barnard and sometimes John McCarthy on clarinet and soprano. The music ranges from upbeat jams to more introspective ballads, and trumpeter Barnard is in particularly strong form on the fresh material. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
