Review

The Tony Richardson-directed story of the 19th century Australian outlaw Ned Kelly, starring Mick Jagger in his second screen role, was poorly received by critics. Its soundtrack has been sought after by Rolling Stones completists, however, because of the Jagger-sung track "The Wild Colonial Boy." That cut -- a plaintive folk ballad, on which Jagger is backed only by a bamboo flute -- is actually uncharacteristic of the album, which mostly features country tunes by novelty songwriter Shel Silverstein, sung by either Waylon Jennings or Kris Kristofferson (before either of them had achieved lasting stardom). Even for Jennings/Kristofferson fans, this is a marginal acquisition, due not so much to the singing (which is okay) as the humdrum, folksy songs. The Rykodisc reissue is a classy package, though, with thorough liner notes about the film and the music. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
