June 27–29, 1880. Australian folk hero and outlaw Ned Kelly, escaping with his gang from pursuing law officers, made a last stand at Glenrowan—rounding up the townspeople and holing up in a hotel. There he and his mates constructed 90-pound iron body armor. The armor hampered more than it helped, and Kelly’s gang—including his brother Dan—were all killed. Kelly was captured and hung on Nov 11, 1880, at Melbourne. The Kelly Gang in their grim armor offered an antihero image that Australians have embraced in film and art.
