Profile

The NED University of Engineering & Technology is the oldest degree-level engineering institution in Pakistan. With its current enrollment of more than 6000 students, NED University offers bachelor’s degree programs in nineteen departments of engineering disciplines, as well as, master’s degrees in some disciplines. Additionally, there are programs for doctoral development of faculty. The University also offers bachelor’s degree programs in Architecture (B-ARCH) and in Computer Science / Information Technology (BCIT). The NED University has its own Internet facility (LAN) over end-to-end Fibre Optic Network available to all the departments. Among public-sector institutions, the NEDUET is unique in that it has a computerized Library Management System interlinked with Optical Fibre Network which makes the library resources available to all the departments while also providing them easy access to libraries / institutions all over the world. NEDUET is also a ISO9000 certified University....

History

The NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi was established in March 1977 under the act of Provincial Assembly of Sindh on upgradation of the former NED Government Engineering College, Karachi. From the historical point of view, therefore, the university is fairly young. However, The NED Government Engineering College which originally formed the nucleus of the University structure was set up in 1922 and is the oldest engineering institution in Pakistan. Starting with an enrolment of 50 students in Civil Engineering more than seven decades ago, the student population in the main campus today has gone up to around 6000 at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

This institution was initially founded as the Prince of Wales Engineering College with the donations of the citizens of Karachi to commemorate the visit made by the Prince of Wales to the city in 1921. The College was renamed as the NED Engineering College in 1924 in memory of Mr. Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw, a well-known philanthropist, whose heirs made substantial donations for the development of the College on his first death anniversary.

After the creation of Pakistan, the Government of the Province of Sindh took over the management of the college on October 17, 1947 and renamed it as the NED Government Engineering College, Karachi. The College remained affiliated to the following universities before it was granted the status of a full-fledged University.

a. The University of Bombay (from inception to 1947)

b. The University of Sindh (from 1947 to 1951)

c. The University of Karachi (from 1951 to 1977)

The NED University of Engineering and technology is the oldest institution now in Pakistan for teaching and turning out Graduate Engineers; it is in the Public Sector – i.e. Government owned – having begun initially as an Engineering College in 1922 established by subscriptions from private donors. The University retains the initials in honor of the principal donor for that College – Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw in its name! Like other such Government owned institutions in developing countries, it has had over the years to overcome various handicaps ranging from shortage of funds to “brain drain” of Faculty Members as well as students. Nevertheless, because of its transparent admission policy which has established its reputation over the years, it attracts the best students – including even some foreigners lacking resources for seeking admission in Universities of developed countries!

This University presently offers undergraduate programs in nineteen (19) Engineering disciplines along with one each in Architecture and in Information Technology. It is also presently offering twenty-seven (27) Master’s level postgraduate programs; this number is also increasing each year. At present, the programs for Doctoral studies are restricted to Faculty Members; this university is implementing its wide-ranging Development Program in which its demands for Faculty Development are of such intensity that they leave no room for offering Doctorate programs for external candidates.

The independent Internet Facility installed in June 1999 was the first of its kind – making this University an independent Internet Service Provider for internal usage. This facility has since been augmented by the PERN facility provided by the Higher Education Commission and supplemented by the portal facility for usage by all its Departments. This University has also been one of – if not the very first – in establishing liaison with industries, public utilities and companies engaged in Consultancy and Construction activities. These efforts have greatly facilitated and also extended its scope for students obtaining gainful employment almost immediately after graduation. This University can thus – without pretending to possess the ability to provide its students the same facilities as in developed countries – certainly offer them intellectual challengers in competing with students possessing abilities of level equal to if not sometimes higher than those in developed countries.

Faculties and Departments

The University currently offers graduate and post-graduate degrees in several engineering disciplines. It has six main faculties:

Facilities

NED University has a well developed infrastructure, which has been evolving over the years to meet the challenges of the modern technology and information based industry. The primary focus of the university has been to train professional engineers rather than research.

Library

The Central Library devotes considerable efforts and resources to the development of an outstanding library collection to meet the needs of the students, teachers and researchers and serves as the regional reference library of engineering & technology.

The library collection includes general circulation books, reference books, encyclopedias, handbooks, periodicals, research journals, government and archive documents, microfilms, microfiche, audio / video cassettes, CD-ROM databases and software. The library offers specialized services in the University campus utilizing computerized retrieval of bibliographic databases containing references to thousands of articles, books, proceedings, technical reports and statistics. The library is fully-computerized, providing online search facility and book management. Besides, the library also provides the student with access to major online research paper collections such as the IEEEXPLORE, ACM, and Springer.

Laboratories

All departments have their own set of laboratories primarily employed in teaching undergraduate students. Every department has approximately five to six labs, with equipment and facilities for one particular sub-field. Apart from their own labs, students benefit from multi-disciplinary courses for which lab training is conducted in laboratories of other departments.

Some of the departments have been receiving active funding from the government during the past few years, which has helped them upgrade their labs with the latest Engineering equipment available.

Internet Service

The Internet Center is equipped with 4 Dell Servers one each for DNS, Proxy, Web and Mail; it has state-of-the-art Cisco Routers and Access Servers, with Cisco Firewall and US Robotics Modems. Computers are connected to each other through high-speed data communications network forming the Internet backbone. The backbone for the internet is taken from Global One, which has a parallel backbone to the NSF resulting in very fast responses. The network has been designed so that educational institutions and corporate institutions can also be connected using high speed lines.

The university has recently started video lecture series where lectures from renowned international Professors are attended by a large number of students.

Industrial Liaison

The Directorate of Industrial Liaison is extremely active is securing internship and job opportunities for NED students and graduates. Almost all of NED University students get the opportunity of doing an industrial internship in their summer and winter breaks during their Third Year of undergraduate studies.

Research

The NED University of Engineering & Technology has accelerated its efforts to contribute to international research and training programs that are being developed through cooperation with other established universities in the West. Previously the only focus of the university has been on its teaching programs. However, recently the university has started M.Eng. by Research and PhD programs. Also, faculty development programs have been initiated under which faculty members are being sent for pursuing PhD and post-doctoral degrees in reputed institutions.

Scholarships

The university provides many scholarship opportunities to its brighter and needy students. Most of these are provided by private foundations, NGOs, and Alumni.

Other Facilities

Some other facilities like, a centrally air-conditioned Auditorium of 600 seating capacity , one Hostel for 200 students, Medical Center, Mosque, Student Cafeterias, Gymnasium and outdoor sports facilities are also available in the campus.
