A state whose name means 'Nine States' from
negeri 'state' and
sembilan 'nine'. With the defeat of the Bugis in the mid-1780s nine small states, owing allegiance to the Sultan of Johor and including parts of present-day Johor, Malacca, Pahang, and Selangor, merged into a loose coalition. It became one of the Federated Malay States in 1896.
