Biography

A collaboration between Super Furry Animal's Gruff Rhys and left-field hip-hop producer Boom Bip -- who first worked together in 2005 when Rhys added vocals to "Do's & Don'ts" from Boom Bip's Blue Eyed in the Red Room -- Neon Neon play warm, dancey music informed by '80s new wave, Prince, and Kraftwerk, among others, while also calling on the contributions of artists like Spank Rock, Yo Majesty, Har Mar Superstar, and the Magic Numbers to fill out their sound. They began recording their debut album in the summer of 2006, playing a finalized version of it at a CMJ party the following year, and around the same time the first two singles, "Trick for Treat" and "Raquel," were released. However, the final product, Stainless Style (which was meant to revolve around the life of the carmaker John DeLorean), didn't come out until March 2008 on Lex Records. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide

Neon Neon is a collaborative project from producer Boom Bip and Gruff Rhys, who is best known as the frontman for the Welsh rock band Super Furry Animals. They began work on the project in October 2006 originally under the moniker Delorean .[1] In March 2008 the duo, by now calling themselves Neon Neon, released a full-length album entitled Stainless Style to generally positive reviews [2] and earned a nomination for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize[3].

Lead singer, Gruff Rhys, cast doubt over the future of Neon Neon in a recent interview for the BBC.

He said "I don't know about making another Neon Neon album because it was quite a specific record about (John) DeLorean's life story. If we did something in the future it would have to be something different. But it's nice that it did well and we get to play it live."[4]

Neon Neon remixed Oasis's song "To Be Where There's Life" from their Dig Out Your Soul album for inclusion as the B-side of Oasis's single, "I'm Outta Time", however, it was only released on the vinyl copy of the single.
