net primary productivity

Geography Dictionary: net primary productivity

In ecology, the amount of energy which primary producers can pass on to the second trophic level. This represents the amount of carbon dioxide taken in by a plant minus the carbon dioxide it emits during respiration. Respiration rates can be measured if the plant's carbon dioxide output in the dark is recorded. Gross primary production may be calculated since:

gross primary production = net primary production + respiration
