Neue Gedichte

Neue Gedichte, a collection of poems by H. Heine, published in 1844. The volume, in addition to the 166 Neue Gedichte proper, contains also Zeitgedichte and Deutschland. Ein Wintermärchen, though the latter was omitted from subsequent editions. The Neue Gedichte are subdivided into Neuer Frühling, Verschiedene, and Romanzen. The section Verschiedene contains three short poems grouped as Tragödie, of which the central one (‘Es fiel ein Reif in der Frühlingsnacht’, by Zuccalmaglio) is given by Heine as ‘ein wirkliches Volkslied’ (‘a real folk-song’).
