A form of analgesia achieved by the concurrent administration of a neuroleptic and an analgesic. Anxiety, motor activity, and sensitivity to painful stimuli are reduced; the person is quiet and indifferent to the environment and surroundings. If nitrous oxide with oxygen is also administered, neuroleptanalgesia can be converted to neuroleptanesthesia.

A state of quiescence, reduced awareness and analgesia produced by the simultaneous administration of a neuroleptic agent, e.g. acepromazine, and a narcotic analgesic, e.g. meperidine. Fixed-dose combinations used extensively in veterinary science are droperidol–fentanyl citrate and etorphine–acepromazine.
