a tridecapeptide, Glp-Leu-Tyr-Glu-Asn-Lys-Pro-Arg-Arg-Pro-Tyr-Ile-Leu-OH, found in mammalian brain and gut, especially in N cells, packaged within secretory vesicles. It is released from the hypothalamus into the circulation. Although initially shown to induce hypotension, it is now known to have a wide variety of pharmacological actions, including muscle contraction. The precursor gives rise to neurotensin and two other derivatives, neuromedin and neuromedin N.
