The New Hampshire Senate is the upper house of the state's General Court, the third-largest parliamentary body in the English-speaking world. Its membership is markedly lower than the General Court's House of Representatives (24 senators versus 400 representatives). The Senate was founded in 1784 and senators are elected every two years. The Senate president becomes acting Governor when the Governor is out of the state or unable to perform duties. Various Senate committees draft legislation that is then voted on by the full house. Senators work with the House of Representatives in sending legislation to the Governor's office for final approval into state law.
