The New Hampshire Senate is the upper house of the state's General Court, the third-largest parliamentary body in the English-speaking world. Its membership is markedly lower than the General Court's House of Representatives (24 senators versus 400 representatives). The Senate was founded in 1784 and senators are elected every two years. The Senate president becomes acting Governor when the Governor is out of the state or unable to perform duties. Various Senate committees draft legislation that is then voted on by the full house. Senators work with the House of Representatives in sending legislation to the Governor's office for final approval into state law.

The New Hampshire Senate has been meeting since 1784. It is the upper house of the New Hampshire General Court. It consists of 24 members representing Senate districts based on population. Currently, there are 14 Democrats and 10 Republicans. In November 2008, New Hampshire became the first state ever to have elected a majority of female state senators. In the 2009-2010 session, 13 of the 24 seats are held by women, 11 of whom are Democrats and the remaining two of whom are Republicans. This is the first time women have outnumbered men in the lower or upper chamber of any state legislature in United States history.[1] [2]
