New Hartford is a city in Butler County, Iowa, United States. The population was 659 at the 2000 census. It is the hometown of U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa.

Geography

New Hartford is located at 42°34′2″N 92°37′17″W / 42.56722°N 92.62139°W / 42.56722; -92.62139 (42.567189, -92.621435)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 659 people, 270 households, and 196 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,303.9 people per square mile (498.9/km²). There were 275 housing units at an average density of 544.1/sq mi (208.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.63% White, 0.15% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.15% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.06% of the population.

There were 270 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 27.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,750, and the median income for a family was $38,816. Males had a median income of $30,909 versus $19,485 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,771. About 8.2% of families and 9.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.1% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.

May 2008 Tornado

New Hartford was struck by a confirmed EF5 tornado on May 25, 2008. Three people were killed in New Hartford, as well as six people in nearby Parkersburg. This the 2nd confirmed EF5 tornado since the Enhanced Fujita scale was introduced, the other occurring in Greensburg, Kansas on May 4, 2007.
