The city of New Haven, Connecticut is protected by the professional career firefighters and paramedics of the City of New Haven Fire Department (NHFD). The New Haven Fire Department was organized on June 24, 1862 and is one of the largest fire departments in the state of Connecticut. The NHFD currently operates out of 10 Fire Stations, located throughout the city, organized into 2 Battalions. The New Haven Fire Department also operates and maintains a fire apparatus fleet of 10 Engines, 4 Trucks, 2 Squad, 2 Emergency Units(Ambulances), 1 Haz-Mat. Unit, 1 Decon. Unit, 1 Fireboat, 1 Arson Investigation Unit, 1 Mobile Command Unit, 1 Brush Unit, 1 Foam Unit, 1 Hose Wagon, and numerous other special, support, and reserve units. The NHFD responds to, on average, approximately 23,900 emergency calls annually.[1]
