Review
After leaving Sony Music Entertainment Philippines, for which they recorded two albums, J Brothers released their third album, New Horizon, in 1999, their first for BMG Records Philippines. The band's previous album, 1998's Walang Ibang Mamahalin (trans: No Other Love), was distinguished by harmonious singing on tuneful, often upbeat melodies, and the album marked a sharp departure from the band's first album, 1996's Inay, which leaned towards passionate folk balladry and easy listening music.
1999's New Horizon reverts to the easy listening style of the first album, but, as did the first album, it also contains substance. About half of the album's ten songs are limpid love songs, while the others contain enough interesting moments to make the album worthwhile.
"Wait for Me" is a ballad rooted in easy listening music, but the catchy chorus and emotive singing make the song worthwhile. "Babe Come Home," "Pag-Ibig Na Kaya" (trans: Is It Really Love), "Magtiwala Ka" (trans: You Trust), and "Jukebox" are tepid easy listening love songs. "Inspiration" is spirited, but also somewhat silly.
"Labanan Ang Tukso" (trans: Fight the Temptation) presents an easy-going melody laid amidst an arrangement tinged with American country music; "Sana'y Pag-ibig Mo Ay Tunay" (trans: I Hope Your Love Is True) features a strong melody, and the song once again has an American country music ambience. The ballad, "New Horizons," has a comely melody and chorus.
J Brothers may not be the most adventurous group around, but the group is versatile and has something to offer. ~ David Gonzales, All Music Guide
