Began publication in 1975 as the successor to Arna. Its first issue contained poetry, e.g. by Vivian Smith and Chris Wallace-Crabbe, short fiction, e.g. by Frank Moorhouse and Michael Wilding, critical articles, and a Tabloid Story supplement. Since the second issue in 1977 it has been published twice yearly and has been a solely critical journal which has focused on new literatures in English, including Australian literature, and literary theory. Since 1988 it has been jointly supported by the New Literatures Research Centre of the University of Wollongong and the English Department of the University of NSW and is now titled New Literatures Review.
