History
The deaths of members of station staff in an air raid during WWII is commemorated on a plaque on a wall in the ticket office.
New ticket gates
New Malden is one of the stations selected by South West Trains to have automatic ticket gates.
They are due to be installed in the main ticket hall in September 2009 with the secondary exit to Dukes Avenue/Station Avenue initially planned to be permanently closed and all passengers having to use the subway and exit/entrance to Coombe Road.
However, following opposition from passengers and some local businesses to the complete closure, a compromise has been proposed where the Dukes Avenue/Station Avenue entrance will be open during peak hours in the morning and evenings, manned by ticket inspectors, but closed at all other times and at weekends. [2]
When eventually completed, the gates/Oyster Card readers will allow future usage of the Oyster "Pay as you go" system.[3].
Platforms 2 and 3 are only used very rarely in the event of disruption preventing use of the 'slow' lines that serve Platforms 1 and 4.
