The 42-member New Mexico Senate provides one-half of the lawmaking fuel in the state legislature. As the legislature's upper house, the Senate writes up and debates bills that impact a variety of issues affecting New Mexicans. Senators are elected by their constituents, with each member representing about 43,000 residents. Senators meet in committee, as well as in the full Senate, to develop legislation that is eventually sent on to the Governor's office for final approval into the New Mexico Constitution. The Senate President leads the proceedings.
