Geography Dictionary:

new political economy

The methodology of new political economy rejects the split between agency and structure characteristic of classical political economy. Instead, it builds on structuration theory, institutional economics, and public choice theory, to develop an integrated analysis which combines theories which analyse agency in terms of instrumental rationality with contextual theories which analyse structures institutionally and historically.
