New Spain

[͵nōō ʹspān]

Former Spanish viceroyalty established in Central and North America in 1535, centered on present-day Mexico City. It comprised all the land under Spanish control N of the Isthmus of Panama, including parts of the S U.S. It also came to include the Spanish possessions in the Caribbean and the Philippines. The viceroyalty was abolished in 1821, when Mexico achieved independence.
